The motivation for the Western Arctic Shelf-Basin Interactions (SBI) Program is to increase our understanding of the physical and biological processes affecting the Arctic Ocean in an effort to predict the regions response to global climate change.  The interdisciplinary program employs field studies focusing on the Chukchi and Beaufort Seas.

The new icebreaker USCGC Healy is well suited for field research in this area and supports a wide variety of oceanographic and meteorological instrumentation.   Included in the ship are two types of Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers (ADCP) that measure relative water velocity beneath the ship, a 150 kHz broadband instrument (BB150) and a 75 kHz Ocean surveyor (OS75).   The two instruments compliment one another; the BB150 with its higher frequency is capable of finer vertical resolution in relatively shallow waters (<200m) while the OS75 yields less detailed information but extends to a greaterr range (>400m).

The raw ADCP data acquired by these instruments are processes at Brookhaven National Laboratory using the CODAS3 shipboard ADCP processing programs developed by the University of Hawaii with additional capabilities developed at Brookhaven. As the data from each cruise is processed, it is made accessible through this web page which allows for the downloading of user specified portions from each cruise in either flat-ASCII or matfile formats. Cruise plots are also available for viewing

Discription of the USCGC Healy's ADCP installations

The operation and maintenance of the oceanographic equipment on the Healy owes a great deal to the ship's company and the marine safety technicians, in particular.  We wish to express our appreciation for their efforts.
